Who Makes the Best Deep Dish Pizza in Chicago?
When you ask Americans what their favorite food is you’ll get as many different responses as there are Americans. While you can’t beat a good burger and a slice of warm apple pie, if you ask Chicagoans what their favorite food is you’d be given a swift boot in the keister if you didn’t say deep dish pizza.
Chicago is known for their amazing take on this American classic, so whenever you get a chance to visit this city you’d better stop by some of the most iconic pizzerias for a slice (or two or three). Here are 12 pizzerias I ve had the pleasure of enjoying over various trips through the Windy City.

Wisdom from “Cool Hand Luke” usually doesn’t have an obvious tie-in to the issues facing Chicago, but that famous line seems apt for the tangled situation involving the mayor, two aldermen, the Magnificent Mile Association, some of its members and whether to apply a special tax to help North Michigan Avenue retailers recover from sundry ailments.
That glittering street of credit-fueled dreams contains some of Chicago’s most visible scars from the pandemic and civil unrest dating from the warm weather. Retail vacancies, once drum-tight on the Mag Mile, are now about 20% and due to go higher, the association said, with Macy’s threatening to leave Water Tower Place and the Gap expected to depart at the end of January.

North Michigan Avenue has lost a good deal of its sheen this year, thanks to the pandemic and the summer’s unrest with its looting and widespread store damage scaring away shoppers.
So we support the creation of a special taxing district that would raise funds to revive the Mag Mile. But we also agree with the aldermen who put the brakes on the measure this week, claiming that rushing to approval in just five months, when the process normally takes a year or so, is risky.
“The SSA [Special Service Area] process has really important way stations and checkpoints to protect the taxpayers who are being asked to pay this extra burden,” Ald. Brendan Reilly (42nd), whose ward includes the Mag Mile, told the City Council’s Committee on Economic and Capital Development this week.
