Durham, N.C. The majority of the time when a Durham police officer is called, no arrest is made, according to a recent analysis of three years of 911 calls by RTI International.
City officials have been wrestling with how to best handle the rising rates of shootings and gun violence in Durham for months. In November, shootings were up by 43% this year compared to last. Fatal shootings were down by 10%, but non-fatal shootings were up by 85%. In terms of policing, we re going to be doing everything we need to do, but it can t just be the police. We need people to cooperate with police, to work with them, and we need all that s committed to finding the root causes of violence because that s going to be helpful, Durham Mayor Steve Schewel said in November.

Cary, N.C. New coronavirus cases have more than tripled at Wake County Public Schools this month, since the district decided to resume in-person learning.
The spike in cases is on track with state and national trends, which have been concerning health officials as more people are ignoring public health guidance on social distancing. More coronavirus deaths and hospitalizations are expected in the coming weeks as millions of Americans are traveling for the holidays.
Students make up the majority of coronavirus cases reported to the Wake County Public School System since the beginning of December.

Jennifer Etkin, resident of one of the neighborhoods on Johnny s route, said he was a part of the fabric of the neighborhood. He knows her children s names, what they re studying and what sports they play. He helps us stay in the know if the neighbors need help, she said. He is such a gem.
Johnny would deliver packages with a big smile, a wave and a friendly toot-toot of his horn, community members said.
