Paintings boxed up in a house sold for £36,000 after they were revealed to be by revered Canadian artist Maud Lewis.
The four paintings had been in the same family for 70 years in Banbury, Oxfordshire, and went to auction with estimates of £100-£200 each.
Valuer Jasper Marsh said he had a hunch the paintings might be worth something but was surprised by the intensity of the auction.
Two works were purchased by Canadian buyers and will return to Canada.

Access to Paid Sick Leave for Nova Scotians

Nova Scotians who must take time off work due to COVID-19 may now qualify for up to four paid sick days under Nova Scotia’s new COVID-19 Sick Leave Program. The $16 million program is expected to help more than 100,000 Nova Scotians.
People who cannot work remotely and miss less than 50 per cent of their scheduled work time in a one-week period due to COVID-19 may be eligible. This includes those who need to take time off because they are awaiting a Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test appointment, and those who are getting tested, are self-isolating while awaiting test results, or are going to get vaccinated.
As Naver closes $754 million CAD acquisition of Wattpad, Allen Lau is looking to scale
South Korean internet company Naver Corp. has officially acquired Wattpad for more than $754 million CAD ($600 million USD).
With the deal now closed, Toronto-based Wattpad has become a Naver brand alongside WEBTOON, a global leader in webcomics that Wattpad will work closely with moving forward. Wattpad’s core app will continue to operate independently while both content companies explore new ways to collaborate. Wattpad CEO and co-founder Allen Lau will report to WEBTOON CEO Jun Koo Kim.
Sources familiar with the deal told BetaKit the final amount of the acquisition may be more than $800 million CAD.

Funding for Halifax Partnership to Spur Innovation

The province is providing $1.9 million to Halifax Partnership to support the economic recovery and to position Nova Scotia as Canada’s start-up capital.
“Our long-term economic success depends on containing the COVID-19 virus,” said Inclusive Economic Growth Minister Labi Kousoulis. “Halifax Partnership will also leverage our start-up ecosystem and experienced business community to spur innovation and inclusive economic growth.”
This renewed commitment to Halifax Partnership provides funding, to be used over the next three years, to support programming and initiatives that will help increase the resilience and competitiveness of the Halifax business community and enhance collaboration between start-ups and established businesses and professionals.
