“Emergency works were undertaken to retain ongoing and future flood flows within the main channel,” Griffiths said. “Current works to address the immediate flood risk to the community include extension of the emergency embankments and construction of stopbanks and gravel groynes at the three breakout locations, and strengthening of existing rock stub groynes and construction of additional groynes adjacent to the Rangitata South Irrigation Ltd ponds.”

The December 2019 Rangitata River floods devastated a lot of farmland. The remaining 36 per cent of the cost will be co-funded by ECan, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency, Rangitata South Irrigation Limited, KiwiRail, Timaru District Council, Ashburton District Council and Transpower.

A milestone for jobs, businesses and regional economic development in Bay of Plenty is being marked as construction gets underway on the multi-million dollar Ōpōtiki harbour infrastructure project.
Economic and Regional Development Minister Stuart Nash has joined Whakatōhea iwi, local councils and representatives of the aquaculture and marine industry at a ceremony with the Prime Minister to celebrate the beginning of the harbour construction.
“We are today celebrating the growth of a community which is now able to move from strength to strength,” Mr Nash said. “The government is investing more than $112 million in three major infrastructure projects as part of the Ōpōtiki Harbour Development project.

Increased employment and growing businesses are some of the benefits already being seen through the multi-million dollar project to develop the small Eastern Bay of Plenty district s harbour.
First-home buyers are taking up the opportunity to get on
the property ladder, quickly buying sections at the new
Tarbet St subdivision that’s been created in
Flaxmere.
The completion of the first, infrastructure
stage of the development was celebrated on-site today, ahead
of the construction phase beginning.
Hastings Mayor
Sandra Hazlehurst said the development of the site, on time
and on budget, illustrated Hastings District Council’s
commitment to addressing the need for more housing in
Hastings district.
“This is the first subdivision of
the Hastings Place Based Pilot to go on the market. It
showcases that we can achieve more effective results by
