The changing of the times in the Alle-Kiski area has been surreal, with many memories that are golden but not forgotten.
Shopping has changed from the hustle and bustle of the small-town “downtown days.” As a child, making our family trip to the Montgomery Ward and J.C. Penney stores in Lower Burrell and going through the shopping avenues of downtown Arnold and New Kensington was enjoyable. Baseball games under the lights at the Twin City baseball field with actual spectators watching were priceless memories for many of us youth in downtown Arnold, as were weekend nights over in Cheswick at the Ches-A-Rena roller skating rink, where many of us met our future spouses.

Cudmore: Amsterdam native Betty Balevic was proud of her Greek roots | The Daily Gazette
SECTIONS
Betty Vasiliki Svolos Balevic of Schenectady was proud of her Greek heritage.
Born in Amsterdam during the Great Depression, Balevic died last month at the age of 90. She was a retired business professor at Skidmore College.
Her parents, Marika and Thomas Svolos, were Greek immigrants who, with other family members, owned The Boston Candy Kitchen in downtown Amsterdam. In 1925 the Svolos family was operating three downtown candy stores in Amsterdam, including one called the chocolate shop.
Their longest lasting and best known location was at 91 East Main St. adjacent to Lurie’s department store near the corner of Walnut Street. There they were especially known for their tasty hot fudge sauce.

My father s mother had an enigmatic history. Her stories would
morph, from time to time, as did her age. For instance, her tombstone is etched with the birth year of 1880. Sources, including Eula, revealed her coming-out party was in 1874.
It was unknown where she was born. Eula was vague about that, perhaps given her early life was one of displacement. Her best recollection was somewhere in Oklahoma or Nebraska.
