County issues update on parks, trails, historic sites

NORRISTOWN   In accordance with updated state and federal COVID-19 mitigation guidelines, Montgomery County Parks, Trails, and Historic Sites (PTHS) have announced the following updates on permitted events within their facilities. Issuance of trail-based Special Use Permits, typically requested for organized races or other events held on regional trails will continue to be suspended through at least June 30, 2021. This applies to the Schuylkill River Trail including the Towpath and Schuylkill East Trail, Pennypack Trail, Cross County Trail, Chester Valley Trail, Audubon Loop, Wissahickon Green Ribbon Trail, and Perkiomen Trail. - Advertisement - Rentals of indoor spaces will be granted based on occupancy limits of 50 percent of capacity

County Seeks to Eliminate Street Names Honoring Confederates, Slaveowners In an attempt to rid Montgomery County of street names tied to the Confederacy and slavery, employees of the Montgomery County Planning Department, part of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), currently are researching area street and park names. In Potomac, Jubal Early Court, J.E.B. Stuart Road and J.E.B Stuart Court will be renamed under the Streets and Parks Facilities Renaming Project, which is a joint effort with the Planning Board, Montgomery Planning and the Montgomery County Parks Department. These street names are in “a subdivision that was created many decades after the Civil War that appear to intentionally use Jeb Stuart’s name in order to valorize and honor the Confederate cause,” said Casey Anderson, chair of the planning board. New names have not yet been chosen.

Woodlawn Park to get new pavilion, play areas in $750,000 gift from BlueCross BlueShield

Clarksville Now WOODLAWN, Tenn. – The BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Foundation recently announced the selection of Woodlawn Park as one of their 10 New BlueCross Healthy Place Projects for 2021. They are awarding the Woodlawn Park community hub project $750,000 of their $7.5 million investment across Tennessee to celebrate the company’s 75th anniversary serving Tennesseans. Of the $750,000 total; $600,000 will be used for the project build and $150,000 will be used for a maintenance fund. Montgomery County Parks and Recreation team member Sally Burchett applied for the BlueCross Healthy Place grant in August 2020 and was notified that Montgomery County would be a recipient of the funds earlier this month.
