In spite of having an educated workforce, proximity to the nation’s capital, and several large private employers, the county’s value proposition to businesses in the market for new locations or considering expansions is not helping the county to grow or maintain its share of regional jobs in industries and occupations that pay high wages. Those jobs are important to the county’s ability to fund the critical government services that the community needs and expects.

Council Member Nancy Navarro, who has held the seat since 2009, can’t run for re-election because of term limits. Navarro said she is still deciding what her next career step might be and has set a deadline of around September. She has not ruled out a run for county executive or a state or federal office. Navarro, who previously served five years on the Board of Education, said, “Everything is still in play, because obviously, after so many years of having the honor to serve on the Board of Education [and] County Council … I still would want to play a role in public service and policy. I’m also being approached in other sectors, so I need to see what makes more sense for me and my family.”

The Montgomery Housing Partnership has proposed a six-story residential building at the intersection of Nebel Street and Old Georgetown Road. The group’s development application says the goal is to provide units for people with a range of incomes. At least 25% (43) of the units will be designated as affordable housing and some will be rented at “levels substantially below” affordable housing guidelines.
