LABOR’S BUDGET REPLY
A welcome plan for social housing for the needy
Anthony Albanese’s commitment to social housing (The Age, 14/5) provides a much needed vision for Australians on low incomes. The added importance of this announcement is the inclusion of older women in the target groups to be housed. It is projected that 440,000 private renters aged over 65 will be living in poverty by 2031 if investment in affordable rental housing is not tackled by governments.

GAS
Letâs work together to eliminate the use of gas
Ignoring any political spin, it just seems sensible and natural to eliminate the use of gas for heating, cooking, hot water or barbecues (TheAge, 5/5). Burning gas is directly producing emissions. Also, with the decreasing capacity of the Bass Strait gas field, it seems certain that gas prices will continue to rise.

INDIA TRAVEL BAN
How many deaths are we prepared to risk?
The travel ban is in place while COVID-19 is running rampant in India and while we do not have sufficient quarantine facilities in Australia. Our hotel quarantine barely copes with the current level of arrivals. We still see COVID-positive cases among the arrivals, even from countries with low rates of infection. We also see cases where COVID-19 is transmitted to quarantine workers. The real question is: How many collateral infections and deaths in Australia are acceptable if we allow travellers from India into this country?

Melbourne households in the eastern and outer northern suburbs have been urged to monitor for COVID-19 symptoms after traces of the virus were detected in their sewer catchments.
Victoria’s health department warned that a person “most likely” was shedding the virus after an infectious period, however the detection of the virus could also be due to a person living in or travelling through the area in the early active infectious phase.
People who have developed COVID-19 symptoms in the following areas are “strongly encouraged” to get tested:
Eastern suburbs catchment from 20-24 April Balwyn, Balwyn North, Blackburn, Blackburn North, Box Hill, Box Hill North, Bulleen, Doncaster, Doncaster East, Donvale, Mitcham, Mont Albert, Mont Albert North, Nunawading, Templestowe Lower
