Islamabad, January 28
Pakistan’s Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed appeals against the acquittal of British-born al-Qaeda terrorist Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh in the kidnapping and murder of American journalist Daniel Pearl in 2002 and ordered his release in the sensational case.
Pearl, the 38-year-old South Asia bureau chief for The Wall Street Journal, was abducted and beheaded while he was in Pakistan investigating a story in 2002 on the links between the country’s powerful spy agency ISI and al-Qaeda.
Sheikh and his three aides were convicted and sentenced in the abduction and murder case of Pearl in Karachi in 2002.
Pearl’s murder took place three years after Sheikh, along with Jaish-e-Mohammad chief Masood Azhar and Mushtaq Ahmed Zargar, was released by India in 1999 and given safe passage to Afghanistan in exchange for the nearly 150 passengers of hijacked Indian Airlines Flight 814.
Daniel Pearl was abducted in Karachi in January 2002 while researching a story about Islamist militants.
Islamabad, Pakistan:
Pakistan s Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed a series of appeals against the acquittal of the British-born militant convicted of masterminding the kidnap and murder of US journalist Daniel Pearl, paving the way for his release along with three others. The court has come out to say that there is no offense that he has committed in this case, Mahmood Sheikh, who represented accused Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, told AFP. The court has said he should be released forthwith, the lawyer added.
The ruling follows an international outcry last year when a lower court acquitted the 47-year-old of murder and reduced his conviction to a lesser charge of kidnapping overturning his death sentence and ordering his release after almost two decades in prison.
