Susan J Tracy: The public has spoken

Susan J. Tracy: The public has spoken Published: 4/18/2021 6:00:04 PM I am responding to the April 6 Gazette article, “Amherst Town Council approves $36.3M Jones Library project.” After five years of public debate and additional years in trustee planning, I was pleased to see that the Town Council voted 10-2 in favor of the Jones Library project last week. In this Gazette article we learn why each councilor voted the way they did. Additionally, the Gazette reporter attributes to Terry Johnson, chair of “Save Our Library,” the group that opposes the project, that “the outcome was expected since the majority of the Town Council ran on a platform supporting the proposal.”

Guest columnist Jena Schwartz: The real inconvenience is racism

Guest columnist Jena Schwartz: ‘The real inconvenience is racism’ By Jena Schwartz I was glad to read a letter by District 5 resident Ana Devlin Gauthier addressing the lukewarm at best response from several members of the Amherst Town Council to a two-day antiracism training. Devlin Gauthier writes, “The work around equity, inclusion, and justice is not comparable to any other work the council does or will do, it underlies all of it, informs all of it, and should be prioritized. It was mentioned in the meeting that asking councilors to attend a two-day training sent a message about the high time commitment of being on council. To be frank, statements like that send a larger message about the perceived importance of this work.”

Guest columnist Alex Kent: Build a library for all

Guest columnist Alex Kent: Build a library for all Staff photo/Ken Heidel Published: 4/14/2021 2:36:50 PM My father has often said, “You could tear down just about every building on a campus and still have a university … as long as you leave the library.” I agree. The library is by far the most important building on any campus. The same holds true for a town. Even more so than Town Hall itself, the centerpiece of Amherst is and must remain the Jones Library. The proposed renovation and expansion of the Jones is the surest way to guarantee that the library will remain centrally relevant to Amherst for decades to come.
