Turkish wrestling icon s death marks 60 years

January 8, 2021 Friday has marked 60 years since the death of Turkish wrestling legend Yasar Dogu. Known as “the father of Turkish wrestling,” Dogu was born in Samsun on the Black Sea coast of Turkey in 1913. He began wrestling practicing a Turkish folk style called Karakucak. He started his wrestling career while he was doing his military service. A heavyweight of Turkish wrestling, Dogu crowned his career with many titles and represented Turkey successfully with the gold medals gained in international tournaments. He secured his first Olympics medal in the 1948 London Olympic Games after winning all five matches. Dogu also claimed a gold medal in the 1951 World Wrestling Championships in Helsinki, Finland. He returned home with gold medals from the European Championships in 1946, 1947 and 1949.

Wednesday, December 23, 2020 Missouri revamps postseason rules and extends season The Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) confirmed Monday that the 2021 MSHSAA State Wrestling Championships will not be held at the University of Missouri due to continued questions and uncertainty of venue availability relative to COVID-19. MSHSAA announced in a press release that Cable Dahmer Arena in Independence has agreed to provide access to an alternative site and partner with MSHSAA to host the 2021 MSHSAA State Wrestling Championships. “We are grateful for the interest from the Cable Dahmer Arena personnel and their desire to help us provide a site for state wrestling championships to take place,” the release said. “Please be advised that due to the restructured postseason, adding ‘sectional tournament’ rounds for girls and boys wrestling, as well as having to secure an alternate facility for the state championships and navigate around the venue’s availability
