Vaccine appointments now open to all 16 and over
Firefighters started assisting distribute vaccines to people unable to leave their homes last week.
Updated 2 p.m. April 13: The long wait for COVID-19 vaccine eligibility ended this week for all but our region’s youngest members. Santa Clara County quietly revised its online vaccination information Monday night, allowing all residents ages 16 and over to start booking appointments. The county announced Tuesday afternoon that anyone can start receiving the vaccine without waiting until Thursday, the previous deadline for expanded eligibility.
Some locations operated by the county weren’t yet listing online availability Monday night and Tuesday morning, but health department officials said in a 1 p.m. Tuesday press conference that they expected a steady stream of new doses arriving from the federal government. The grand jury report notes that while every department has a nondiscrimination policy, the unique work setting of a fire department coupled with the low number of women in fire service presents out-of-the ordinary workplace challenges because they live together and rely on each other during life-or-death situations. These unique features of this workplace make it more challenging for women to report discrimination and/or harassment, the report states.
While Capriles said the vast majority of her colleagues were awesome people and in some cases friends for life, harassment was a persistent issue for female firefighters. In most cases, she said, the person making an inappropriate comment didn t realize that he said something sexist until someone pointed it out to them.
Fewer than 1 in 20 firefighters are women across Santa Clara County, raising questions of gender bias, discrimination and lack of inclusivity, according to a report by the county s Civil Grand Jury.
