Potential Covid-19 hotspots to be revealed as HIDE takes effect

PETALING JAYA: A list of potential Covid-19 hotspots will be published by the government starting today, as the movement control order is reimposed in certain states. The Health Ministry is expected to reveal the Hotspots Identification for Dynamic Engagement (HIDE) system and the list of potential hotspots that it predicts. Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba said more information would be revealed today. While Malaysians are glad for the system, businesses are worried that such a list will incite fear and panic. Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (Fomca) president Datuk Dr Marimuthu Nadason said it’s a good move to have the system in place.

Postponing toll rate hike to 2022 a relief as it eases public burden

Weighing in: Prof Yeah welcome the move to delay toll hike. PETALING JAYA: Postponing the toll hike to 2022 has given households and businesses breathing room amid the crushing pandemic. Professor of Economics at Sunway University Business School Prof Dr Yeah Kim Leng said as the country was currently in the early stage of economic recovery, the toll relief could be viewed as a fiscal measure to sustain the disposable income of households and businesses. In turn, the toll savings when spent or invested by households or firms would have a multiplier effect on the economy, thereby strengthening the recovery momentum, he said.

LETTER | High household debt: Should we be concerned?

LETTER | High household debt: Should we be concerned? A - LETTER | Bank Negara Malaysia has reported that household debt to gross domestic product ratio has risen to a new peak of 93.3 percent as of December 2020, from the previous record high of 87.5 percent in June 2020.  According to BNM Report, household debt growth was mainly driven by car, housing and personal financing loans. Should we be concerned? Generally, a high level of household debt can be risky. A high level of debt increases the sensitivity of households to any shock to their incomes.  Also, during periods of financial stress, highly indebted households tend to cut their spending more than their less-indebted peers. This can make economic recovery more difficult.

Scammers using more sophisticated tactics

Scammers using more sophisticated tactics 14 Apr 2021 / 10:53 H. FEDERATION of Malaysian Consumers Associations (Fomca) and the National Consumer Complaints Centre (NCCC) would like to alert Malaysian consumers on the sudden spike of scam-related complaints. Scammers are becoming more sophisticated with their tactics and are hoping consumers would let their guard down. Consumers are urged not to provide their personal, banking or any details to strangers. Fomca has been receiving around 450 complaints and enquiries related to scams since January. Based on Fomca’s observation, the scammers take advantage of vulnerable consumers, and surprisingly some of the victims are highly-educated. It is becoming more difficult to know and differentiate between a scam and a legitimate business.
