The Ministry of Education has gazetted 4th May 2021, to be the commencement date for Acts of Parliament Nos 18, 19 and 20 of 2019, that established the three universities, namely: University of Malawi (UNIMA), Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS), and Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS), respectively through Government Notice Nos 27, 28, and 29 of 2021 published in the Malawi Gazette Supplement, dated 26th April, 2021.

Government, through the Ministry of Education, has finally set 4 May 2021 as date when the colleges under the University of Malawi (Unima) will be officially delinked.

Capital Hill has since appointed a new steering committee to complete the delinking process and operationalization of the new universities.
The steering committee comprises Committe Professor Emmanuel Kaunda (Chairperson), Dr Philip Kaonda, Dr Tasokwa Kakota-Chibowa, Dr Asyatu Chaweza, Dr Macphall Magwira and the Director of Higher Education in the Ministry of Education.
Government resolved to delink Polytechnic, Kamuzu College of Nursing and College of Medicine from Unima to, among others, increase access to higher education and improve governance and operational efficiency in public universities in the country.
Government orders university council to delink colleges
The Malawi government has ordered the council of the University of Malawi (UNIMA) to push ahead with delinking or unbundling its constituent colleges, a mechanism to establish more public institutions, despite the project having been suspended on 20 January.
The council voted on that day to suspend the creation of the independent universities, claiming that a 2017 decision authorising the process was not in line with Malawian law at the time and, hence, was
ultra vires.
This stalling has clearly upset a government that secured legislation last year to authorise this long-running project. Subsequently, it has now formally instructed the UNIMA council to go ahead with delinking.
Vice-President Saulos Chilima says government will proceed to delink the University of Malawi (UNIMA) into three universities namely the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences MUBAS through Act No. 19 of 2019; the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHES); and the University of Malawi (UNIMA) passed as Act No. 18 of 2019.
The Vice-President met with the Council of the University of Malawi today alongside the Minister of Justice Titus Mvalo, the Attorney General Chikosa Silungwe, Director of Higher Education Dr. Levis Eneya and officials from the Department of Statutory Corporations and Public Sector Reforms where government’s position on the delinking was communicated.
