Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) says it has maintained the pump price of petrol but raised the price of gas and gave no guarantees that the pump pruces for the petrloleum will be maintained in the near future.
Fitina Khonje,: We are unable to make a forecast because we import fuel and there are so many dynamics at play which can influence price changes.
Petrol qualified for an upward adjustment in April.
Fitina Khonje, MERA Consumer Affairs and Public Relations Manager, disclosed this in Blantyre when she briefed journalists the results of the monthly review of electricity and energy prices in the country.
Mera spokesperson Fitina Khonje disclosed this at a media briefing currently underway in Blantyre.
Mera has also maintained prices for petrol, diesel and paraffin at K899.20 per litre, K898 per litre, K719.60 per litre respectively.
This is despite petrol landed costs increasing by 9.8 percent; hence, qualifying for price adjustments.
The authority has also maintained Jet A fuel price at K721. 25 per litre and K667. 82 per litre at Kamuzu International Airport and Chileka International Airport, respectively.
Mera has, however, hiked the price of liquid petroleum gas by 5.79 percent from K1 952 to K2 065.
The price adjustments are effective this midnight.

Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority ( MERA) has asked Malawian citizenry to embrace the use of Liquefied Petroleum Gas( LPG) as alternative source of energy over electricity.
Speaking during one – day media training in Zomba on Saturday April 10,2021, MERA Consumer and Public Relations Manager Fitina Khonje said due to continued high demand for electricity people should embrace the use of gas as alternative source of energy, adding that the development will facilitate the country to reserve electricity for other economic activities.
Khonje adds that Liquefied Petroleum Gas is efficient, fast and cheap, saying it has economic benefits at both household and national level.
