Greenport’s No. 1 cheerleader was a big, hard-hitting lineman for the Greenport High School football team.
Craig Richter (Class of 1967) was a right tackle on one of the great Greenport teams of the era, the 1966 team that went 7-1.
Bob Heaney was the right guard on that team. He once asked Mr. Richter to select a code word to use during games to let Mr. Heaney know when he would go first when the two cross blocked. The word Mr. Richter chose: “cupcakes.” In years to come, it became something of a running joke between the two.

Bishop-elect William Koenig
The Holy Father, Pope Francis, has named the Rev. Monsignor William Edward Koenig, vicar for clergy for the Diocese of Rockville Centre, New York, as the 10th Bishop of Wilmington.
The appointment was announced April 30 in Washington, D.C., by Archbishop Christophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio to the United States. Bishop-elect Koenig (pronounced Kay-nig) follows the Most Rev. W. Francis Malooly, who has served as bishop of the Catholic community of Delaware and Maryland’s Eastern Shore since 2008.
Born Aug. 17, 1956, in Queens, N.Y., Koenig grew up in East Meadow, N.Y. where he and his family were parishioners of St. Raphael’s Church. He attended St. Raphael’s Elementary School; St. Pius X Preparatory Seminary in Uniondale, N.Y.; Cathedral College in Douglaston, N.Y.; and the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception in Huntington, N.Y. I had the privilege of serving with him during my time as an Auxiliary Bishop in the Diocese of Rockville Centre when he was the Rector of Saint Agnes Cathedral. Bishop-elect Koenig has great energy, zeal, and administrative ability. Bishop-designate William E. Koenig of Wilmington was in his home diocese of Rockville Centre, New York, in late April when his cellphone rang. Archbishop Christophe Pierre, the papal nuncio to the United States, was on the other end informing him that that he had been chosen to become the 10th bishop of the Diocese of Wilmington.
