Starting on Memorial Day, all Diocese of Pittsburgh churches will be allowed to have 100% seating capacity for Mass. Masks, however, still will be required in accordance with state orders. The announcement comes on the heels of Gov. Tom Wolf’s decision last week to lift covid-19 mitigation orders except for the requirement that masks be worn indoors. Priests, deacons, readers and cantors have the option of removing their masks when speaking or singing as long as they maintain a safe social distance from others.

Holy Spirit Academy in New Castle to close

Nate Smallwood | Tribune-Review   TribLIVE s Daily and Weekly email newsletters deliver the news you want and information you need, right to your inbox. Holy Spirit Academy, the Catholic school serving students in pre-K through eighth grade in New Castle, will close at the end of the academic year, the Diocese of Pittsburgh said Thursday. The Rev. Joseph McCaffrey, pastor at Holy Spirit Parish, submitted his request to close the school to Bishop David Zubik due to ongoing concerns over declining enrollment, financial difficulties and rising tuition costs. Zubik granted the request. “In doing so, I also want to recognize the wonderful contributions of teachers and staff at Holy Spirit Academy who dedicated themselves to educating our children in the Catholic faith and of the many school families and parishioners who have worked diligently over the past number of years in support of the school,” Zubik said in a statement.
