An East Bay priest who died in 2012 – six years after retiring as the longest serving priest within the Diocese of Oakland – is accused in a new lawsuit of raping a young boy on multiple occasions between 1972 and 1974.
The accusation comes as part of a wave of new lawsuits hitting Catholic dioceses across the state, made possible by a recent law opening a three-year window for new civil cases based on older allegations previously barred by the statute of limitations. Attorneys involved in those cases say more than 700 new accusers have come forward with allegations against Northern California dioceses alone since last year, and they expect more to follow.

Lent is an “extraordinary time” for Catholics, said Florian Romero, who was tapped to direct the new Office of Stewardship formed in 2017 to help move all parishes in the archdiocese toward a stewardship model.

A little over a month after Valentino Carrillo opened La Frontera Mexican Restaurant in East Oakland last winter, the COVID pandemic hit and upended his business plans. Just as he was preparing to launch a backyard patio drag brunch service on Sundays last March, the viral outbreak led public health officials to order restaurants to end indoor dining.
Carrillo, a gay man well known in the East Bay s nightlife community, decided to completely close the restaurant for two weeks. He was concerned remaining open would put his staff at risk, especially the older women working for him. As it became clear the health crisis would not subside anytime soon, he held a meeting with his employees to decide what to do.
A 16-year-old driver was involved in a rollover crash when her puppy jumped on her lap and distracted her in Maine. Fryeburg police said the crash happened Tuesday morning on West Fryeburg Road when the girl’s 8-week-old puppy jumped into her lap.
