There are fears an outbreak of Queensland fruit fly in South Australia could be devastating for the horticulture industry, with some growers unable to move stone fruit during their harvest period.
Key points:
Quarantine rules mean producers are unable to move fruit during their harvest period
The public are being reminded not to bring fruit into SA or the Riverland
Fruit fly larvae were found in a backyard apricot tree in Renmark West on Tuesday, leading to Primary Industries Minister David Basham declaring an outbreak yesterday.
Joanne and Ian Griffiths and their son Zach left Sydney on Sunday to drive to SA
But when they arrived at the SA border, they were turned away due to an error
They learnt the mistake the next day, but could no longer pass through Victoria
The Griffiths travelled back through NSW, driving 2028kms and 23 hours in total
Every state and territory shut to NSW midnight Sunday due to Sydney outbreak
SA were forced to apologise after mistakenly blocking entry to early travellers
