With its abundance of natural beauty, its easy access to the ocean and the bay, and its no-shoes lifestyle, South Mission Beach was a great place to grow up back in the day. Even if that day was during the early 1940s, when World War II was raging and San Diego was a big part of the wartime action.
Comfort and escape during a scary time. That’s what author Karen Cushman visualized when she thought about the joys of a San Diego childhood. Even if that childhood wasn’t hers.
For 50-plus years, Cushman’s husband, Philip, had been telling her stories about the barefoot joys of growing up in South Mission Beach. About fishing for perch and floating in a rowboat in the middle of the bay with a good book and a perpetual sunburn. Cushman liked the sound of it. All of it.

Sotelo is the artist behind the comic character Grump. The San Diegan missed out on selling her Grump book last year when the pandemic shut down the 2020 Comic-Con.
“It really kind of took the wind out of my sails,” Sotelo said.
However, Sotelo supported the decision to cancel the 2021 convention as well.
“I kind of wasn’t surprised,” Sotelo said. “I was thinking, ‘Yeah, I’m glad that they let us all know and it’s not some kind of iffy thing.’ ”

Coronavirus Edition: In November, the virus continued to affect books sales, with our bookstores surviving with limited to no foot traffic, mail orders, and curbside pick-ups.
On the hardcover list, two new releases leapfrogged to the top, with Brandon Sanderson’s
Rhythm of War (book four of The Stormlight Archive) clinching the top spot, followed by
Ready Player Two, Ernest Cline’s sequel to
Ready Player One. Our new runner-up was
The Fires of Vengeance by Evan Winter (Orbit US), book two of The Burning series. We had 38 nominated titles, up from last month’s 28.
The release of the latest book in The Stormlight Archive seems to have influenced the paperback list as well, with
