(Photo: David Twesigomwe) Two new Canada Research Chairs awarded prestigious Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowships March 16, 2021    UM Canada Research Chairs Dr. Galen Wright and Dr. Britt Drögemöller, faculty members in the Max Rady College of Medicine, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, were recently awarded a pair of one-year fellowships that will allow them to collaborate on neurogenomics and precision medicine with Stellenbosch University, South Africa. The Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship program, founded in 2013, is designed to develop long-term collaborations between universities in Africa and North America. The project is one of 56 through which the program will pair African-born scholars in North America with institution in Africa to collaborate on research, graduate training and mentoring activities in the coming months.

Approximately $2.9 million has been provided for three studies, one each in Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia, to help further inform decision-making around prevention strategies in neighbourhoods, schools and daycares.

Approximately $2.9 million has been provided for three studies, one each in Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia, to help further inform decision-making around prevention strategies in neighbourhoods, schools and daycares. This will also help with vaccine surveillance once vaccines are given to teaching personnel. The studies will also evaluate the effects of the pandemic on teachers’ mental health.

Dr. Julie Bettinger, an associate professor at UBC, is the lead investigator for the CANVAS study.BC Children’s Hospital A group of doctors across Canada are hoping to monitor the safety of the COVID-19 vaccines and are looking for vaccinated and unvaccinated people. The Canadian National Vaccine Safety Network (CANVAS) wants 600,000 individuals (300,000 per approved vaccine) to sign up for the web-based survey to track any potential adverse reactions.  “Tracking vaccine safety is a critically important task which CANVAS conducts for many vaccines,” said Dr. Julie Bettinger, the questionnaire s lead investigator, in a news release. “We are massively scaling up this work to find out whether and how often any adverse reactions occur after a COVID-19 vaccination.
