Many elderly residents of the Mid-Ohio Valley are calling into local health departments, the Times and local pharmacies with the same question.
“How do I schedule my shot? How can I get the vaccine?” they ask. “I can’t get anyone to call me back and give me a straight answer.”
Ohio is moving into Phase 1B of its coronavirus vaccination effort, coordinated through the state’s regional readiness coordinators and county emergency management coordinators.
That’s how first responders in Washington County saw the first opportunities for shots in the first weeks of the new year following medical professionals like those published on social media by Memorial Health System.

MARIETTA Health departments in Washington County are organizing vaccination events, starting with the priority segments of society, officials said.
The Washington County Health Department on Monday vaccinated first responders and health care workers by invitation and appointment only at the Broughton Nature and Wildlife Education Area on Ohio 821 in Marietta.
A hundred vaccinations were administered on Monday, according to Sherry Ellem, public information officer for the health department. Things went well on Monday, she said.
“It was wonderful,” Ellem said.
Recipients were required to remain for 15 minutes as a precaution, Ellem said. Most of the side effects experienced included injection site soreness the day after, she said.
From staff reports
Officials from the Marietta/Belpre Health Department have received calls from city employees and residents over the past several days, all wanting to know how soon they can get the COVID-19 vaccine.
The Marietta/Belpre Health Department, Washington County Health Department, and Memorial Health System are the three local registered COVID-19 vaccination providers. Quantities are limited and will be for the foreseeable future.
Providers receive weekly shipments with quantities determined by the Ohio Department of Health based upon the amount of vaccine allocated to Ohio.
Providers are in Phase 1A of the COVID-19 vaccination process. High-risk healthcare providers and residents/staff of congregate care facilities are prioritized for vaccination in Phase 1A.
