Sen. Dennis A. Bradley Jr., D-Bridgeport, and his former campaign treasurer, Jessica Martinez, were accused in a federal indictment unsealed Tuesday of conspiring in 2018 to defraud Connecticut’s public campaign financing program of $179,850.
Informed of the indictment, Bradley surrendered to federal marshals and appeared in U.S. District Court to face conspiracy and wire fraud charges. Martinez, who was removed last year as the chair of the city’s Board of Education, also surrendered. In separate appearances, both pleaded not guilty.
The indictment was returned Monday by a grand jury and ordered unsealed in U.S. District Court in New Haven, where Bradley arrived in handcuffs.

BRIDGEPORT Charismatic. Articulate. Charming. Handsome.
Those are the words state Sen. Dennis Bradley’s fans and even some critics used this week to describe a 37-year-old politician who, over about a decade, went from Bridgeport outsider to being considered a 2023 mayoral contender.
It is too soon to know if this week’s developments mark the beginning of the end of his political career. But Bradley’s arrest Tuesday for allegedly attempting to fraudulently obtain $179,850 in state campaign grants is not considered a good development for a man who clearly thought he was just getting started.

BRIDGEPORT When Bridgeport Board of Education member Jessica Martinez was charged this week in a campaign fund scheme, at least one of her fellow board members had prepared for that scenario.
The elections complaint that led to the charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and wire fraud had been filed in June 2018. And, according to Chairman John Weldon, the school board became aware of the federal investigation at the start of last year.
