COVID-19: Florida lags behind other big states in vaccinating public
While about one in three adults across Florida have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19, data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show the state lagging behind other large states.
Statewide, 8,684,024 people in Florida have gotten at least one shot, including 5,985,537 residents fully vaccinated, a state health department report published Wednesday shows.
About 34% of residents ages 18 and older were fully vaccinated, the CDC reported. That s lower than large states such as New York (41%), Michigan (38%), and California and Illinois 37% each, the same share of adults nationwide and on par with Texas (34%).
The county mandate requires people wear masks inside businesses, government buildings, and public places where social distancing in accordance with CDC guidelines is not possible or not being practiced. It also applies to Palm Tran buses.
Commissioners asked County Administrator Verdenia Baker on Tuesday to come up with changes but none had been issued as of late afternoon. Baker could not be reached for comment.
When going outdoors, such as to a park or picnic with friends, President Joe Biden said Tuesday, “You can do it without a mask. … The odds of getting or giving the virus to others is very very low if you’ve both been vaccinated.”
Is Palm Beach County’s mask mandate effective if its leaders don't abide by it? Numerous commissioners were photographed without masks at the opening of the Delray Beach Market last weekend.
