Former Olympic qualifier reminisces on U S Rowing dream - KOBI-TV NBC5 / KOTI-TV NBC2

GOLD HILL, Ore. A Gold Hill man is watching the Tokyo Olympics in a special light. Steve Kiesling successfully qualified for the U.S. Olympic Rowing team back in 1980, but the Cold War prevented him from getting his shot to compete and live out his dream. “Russia invaded Afghanistan in 1979 and President Carter decided we shouldn’t go, I mostly like Carter, but that was just the stupidest thing in the world – it’s still painful,” said Kiesling. Burned Area Response Team assessing safety hazards following Tennant Fire

NORTHERN CALIFORNIA Have you heard of a ‘Burned Area Emergency Response’ team? The BAER Team Leader, Jeff Tenpas, says the team comes up with treatments to minimize damage to scorched natural resources. He says with the ground cover burnt, the team seeks out areas where flooding or falling rocks could occur more easily. This comes after the fire burned over 10,000 acres. “There’s going to be more run off, mudflows, resources damaged by the fire one of way or another,” said Tenpas.
