Excessive use of force investigation opened by Marion Police

MARION, Ill. (WJPF) Marion Police are investigating a possible incident of excessive use of force by it’s officers. The incident happened around midnight Friday outside of Pookie’s Beer, Burgers, Bocce. Bystander video shows three police officers attempting to take a man in custody. The man, who is laying on the street, is punched in the side and back repeatedly by one officer. Then, while the man is laying on his stomach, with at least one arm held behind his back, a fourth officer walks up to the man and discharges his Taser into the man’s back. Marion Police say officers were initially called to the area after a report of a person on a rooftop who was throwing bottles onto the street below. They say the man who is seen in the video is not the man who was throwing the bottles, but rather, the man interfered with officers on the scene and assaulted a female bartender. The man who threw the bottles was later arrested.

A year soon scarred by social and political upheaval: The assassination of Malcolm X. Bloody Sunday. The Vietnam War. The Watts Riots.  Jimmie Lee Jackson would see none of it. The 26-year-old showed up the night of Feb. 18 in Marion, Alabama, where hundreds of people had gathered to march in protest of the arrest of a local civil rights activist. When police and state troopers intervened to break up the march, the scene outside Zion United Methodist Church turned violent.
