After a rough couple of weeks, the Bears bounced back last weekend with two statement wins over the No. 4 Sun Devils. Cal, which was ranked No. 6 in the country going into the two matches against Arizona State University, had taken a slide in the standings after four consecutive losses at the hands of now No. 1 USC and No. 3 UCLA. These were the Bears’ biggest wins of the season, marking Cal’s first conference victories of the season. ASU is also the highest-ranked team Cal has defeated this season.

On Valentine’s Day, Cal women’s water polo opened its season against Fresno State after more than 11 months without formal competition. If there’s a heart-shaped candy with an apt message for the way the No. 7 Bears handled the No. 11 Bulldogs on Sunday, the lettering on that candy would read, “Be mine.” That is to say, the blue and gold owned their opponent in their season opener.
In its commanding 16-7 victory, Cal displayed a level of firepower that it rarely, if ever, reached last season.
