The Tendring Woodland Initiative Group (TWIG) set out to plant 30,000 trees to mark the 30th anniversary of the Tree Council – which Tendring Council has been part of since it was founded. Once upon a time, when Celtic tribes populated Britain, the Yew tree was revered as a symbol of longevity and rebirth and would be worshipped as such. This continued under Roman occupation, too, but such practises were stopped when the Empire converted to Christianity.
Many Yew trees now can be found in churchyards, much like the one that houses the Crowhurst Yew because Christian s often built their places of worship over that of the Pagan s as a way to supplant the religion.

Levens Hall opens its gardens to celebrate World Topiary Day

A historic South Lakeland hall is holding several events tomorrow to mark its inaugural World Topiary Day celebration.
Levens Hall and Gardens, near Kendal, has created the celebration of all things topiary.
Taking place on the day that was traditionally set aside for Levens Hall’s Radish Feast – a jamboree of fun, games and downing of its famous Morocco Ale founded in the late 17
th century – World Topiary Day will provide visitors with the opportunity to explore over 100 pieces of topiary, with the help of head gardener, Chris Crowder.
