Island Briefs CORRECTION In last week’s issue, we incorrectly stated the date paid and permit parking would begin in Bar Harbor. That correct date is May 15.   Cadillac requires advance reservation and a park pass.   BAR HARBOR  Starting May 26 through Oct. 19, the National Park Service is requiring advanced vehicle reservations to access Acadia National Park’s Cadillac Summit Road. The reservation system, originally tested by in the summer of 2020, is an effort to protect Cadillac Summit’s natural environment and to avoid overcrowding of the parking lot.    To make a vehicle reservation to access Cadillac Mountain by car, go to www.recreation.gov and enter Cadillac Summit in the search box. The cost is $4 per vehicle, plus a $2 reservation fee. Once the vehicle reservation is booked, visitors should save the confirmation code and purchase a park pass.  

Playwright s hideaway, near Madison s Lakewood Theater, sold after 15 years on market

The buyers of a vintage bed-and-breakfast with plenty of history are looking forward to doing a period renovation and likely reopening it as an inn in a couple of years. Paul and Paula Saunders bought the Colony House at 68 Beach Road in Madison from Robert Thompson and family for $570,000. John I. McCarthy of Legacy Properties Sotheby’s International Real Estate represented both buyer and seller in the transaction. McCarthy also acknowledged Donna Mills Stevens at Skowhegan Savings Bank, Rebecca Cayford Esq. and Corson & Blaisdell P.A. in the deal. The shingle-sided structure was custom designed and built in 1929 as a summer home for Broadway playwright John Bard Hymer, on the western shore of Lake Wesserunsett in Somerset County. Features include hardwood floors, working fireplaces and a spiral staircase. The main house has six bedrooms, five bathrooms and a sunroom overlooking the lake. The property also has an adjacent four-bedroom cabin that sleeps eight. 

Octagon-shaped B&B in Oakland changes hands

An unusual octagon-shaped bed-and-breakfast in Oakland, built in 1850, has long thrived not only on tourism but on winter trade by visiting professors. Henry H. Wildes Jr. and Sharon M. Wildes sold the Pressey House, at 32 Belgrade Road, to Ronald and Nicole Goodheart for an undisclosed price. The list price was $649,000. John McCarthy of Legacy Properties Sotheby’s International Real Estate represented the sellers and Jordan Stolt of Summit Real Estate represented the buyers in the deal. Also participating in the transaction were Andy Rhoades of Kennebec Saving Bank and attorney Jerome Gamache. Located at the north end of Messalonskee Lake, the house was built between 1854 and 1858 by H.T. Pressey. It was put on the National Register of Historical Places in 1977, according to the inn’s website.

The star had owned the longtime retreat with his wife, the actress Kelly Preston, who died last year at the age of 57 of breast cancer. The couple purchased the 30-room estate, on the north end of Islesboro Island, in the early 1990s, according to a spread about the vacation getaway in Architectural Digest.
