Gorey gardaí are investigating after headstones at the old Clonattin graveyard on the outskirts of Gorey were damaged by spray paint.
The blue paint, commonly used to mark roads, was sprayed across a number of headstones, some of which are very significant to Gorey s history.
The incident was reported to gardaí during the last weekend of February with a clean up due to take place as soon as possible.
Genealogist John Nangle, who is part of a Graveyard Committee in the North Wexford Historical Society, visited the graveyard last week and was appalled by what he saw.
The graveyard had become very overgrown in recent years until a team of volunteers, including members of North Wexford Historical Society and Gorey Tidy Towns, cleared it three years ago. Wexford County Council now helps maintain it.
Councillor pledges to tackle Kilrush street lighting extension
February 6, 2021
A KILRUSH-based councillor is to make efforts to extend street lighting between the Shanakyle Road and St Senan’s Graveyard.
Independent member of the West Clare Municipal District, Ian Lynch, tabled a motion calling for the extension and seeking details on options and costs for new lights.
“St Senan’s Graveyard Group contacted me to see if they could get the lights extended out about 200 metres,” Councillor Lynch told the January meeting of the district committee. “The isolation that people are experiencing through Covid is prompting many to get some bit of comfort out of visiting the graveyard to see their loved ones. Sometimes people have gotten caught in the evening times, on the short evenings. The group asked me to put in this notice of motion. Pre-empting the response, I was trying to get a feel for the cost of putting up these lights. It’s a motion that’s come up several times
Keeler Tavern Museum & History Center Virtual Talks to Explore the Role of Currier & Ives in 19th Century American Mass Media with Collector Joel Third Written by KTMHC
Two of longtime Ridgefield resident Joel Third’s passions have been collecting Currier & Ives prints and volunteering at Keeler Tavern Museum & History Center. In January and February, he’ll bring those passions together for two virtual talks.
In January, Third will present 19th Century American Mass Media, an exploration of the role Currier & Ives had as lithograph publishers in the late 1800s. In February, Third’s program will be View of Women in the 19th Century. In this program, Third will explore the role of women in society, their fight for suffrage, and their role in the temperance movement as seen through the work of Currier & Ives. KTM&HC is hosting both programs on Zoom.
