BATON ROUGE, La. – Today the Louisiana Department of Education released the names of 21 students selected as finalists in the state’s annual Students of the Year competition. The 21 students selected include one elementary, middle and high school student from each of the state’s seven regions. The finalists represent traditional public, public charter and nonpublic schools. The finalists will participate in a virtual ceremony on April 21, when the winners will be announced for each grade level.
“I’m proud of each of these finalists and would be honored to have any of them represent us as a Louisiana Student of the Year,” said State Superintendent of Education Dr. Cade Brumley. “Their achievements and hard work are proof that Louisiana’s children are as capable as any in the nation.” Public and nonpublic schools were asked to submit one candidate from their student body.

Petitions seek to remove Custer s name from county
Debate over the legacy of Gen. George Armstrong Custer and whether it should be imprinted in the fabric of the community is continuing to make its way through the regional discourse.
A series of petitions calling for the removal of Custer’s name from various landmarks and entities throughout Monroe County are circulating on Change.org, an online advocacy platform.
Launched earlier this week by Monroe Charter Township resident Katybeth Davis, three petitions are calling for Custer Airport, Custer Road, and Custer Baseball/Softball League to be renamed.
The petitions allege Custer’s actions during the American Indian Wars targeted Native Americans, resulting in the deaths of innocent men, women, and children.

Missouri House narrowly passes private schooling tax credit bill
After years of attempts, the GOP-controlled state House has passed a bill that would allow donors to provide scholarships for students to attend a private Missouri K-12 school. In return, those donors would get state tax credits equal to the amount of their gift. The scholarships could also be used for tutoring, school supplies, and computer gear. The plan could cost the state up to $75 million annually.
