City council offers support for tech millage renewal

City council offers support for tech millage renewal The City of Monroe has thrown its support behind the renewal of the county-wide education technology millage, which voters will consider in a May 4 special election.  Council on Monday unanimously approved a resolution of support for the one-mill levy renewal which, if passed, would extend the millage another five years.   State law says the Monroe County Intermediate School District is responsible for collecting the revenue raised by the millage. The ISD and the county’s public school districts, along with New Bedford Academy and Triumph Academy, each receive a share of the revenue based on enrollment numbers.

Monroe County United, religious leaders to present panel discussion

Topics will be broken up into segments so that every participant has a chance to weigh in. Pre-registration is required and users are encouraged to submit a question to the panel before the gathering, set to take place 5:30 p.m. Saturday.  Though no topic is off the table, the main purpose is to bring residents together  regardless of race or religious affiliation.  “I think all (of us) are on the same page. The goal is to promote healing and whatever the format takes for our community that we as religious leaders can identify how we can be a help to the community with our churches and congregations and to promote that healing that is necessarily in these divisive times,” Vogel said. “We’ve just been through a year of just complete udder confusion, divisiveness and anxiety-driven things. Peace and healing is what’s necessary in order for us as a community to move forward in a positive way.

Monroe County Commission doesn t want more ROGO units in Florida Keys

When Monroe County Commissioners discussed future development, or the lack there of it, on Wednesday, they finally voiced opposition about taking any more state-issued building allocations called ROGO (Rate of Growth Ordinance) units. They cited current traffic levels on U.S. 1 and impacts to residents’ quality of life for not accepting new ROGO units, which are needed to turn vacant lots into residences. “I don’t want the perception that we are looking for new ROGO units,” Commissioner Mike Forster said. “We’re at buildout. I hope we don’t get any more ROGO allocations. I live with gridlock every day.”

These events and classes aim to help people in the Poconos

From time-to-time, well OK, just about every day, I get something in my inbox that is probably helpful to someone out there.  So, I have gathered up a few of these and thought I would put together a bit of a potpourri of different programs, events and opportunities that might just catch someone’s eye. First up are two programs being offered by the Carbon Monroe Pike System of Care.  They are two virtual training programs called Trauma 101 and 102. There is no cost and the programs are directed to professionals, caregivers and community members.  Although the trainings are virtual, a camera and microphone are required.
