Stocksfield Ian Warburton Stocksfield Retired Men’s Association will meet on Zoom on Thursday 15 April, commencing at 11am. Peter Jackson, Chairman of the Nenthead Mines Conservation Society and an expert in his field, will be talking about Mining in the North Pennines. Nenthead Mines is a fascinating and historic place at Nenthead, near Alston. This remote valley is covered by remains from the lead and zinc mining industry of the North Pennines, including mine entrances, watercourses, dressing-floors and buildings. The site is famous for its geology and is notable for rare lichens and plants growing on the metal-rich mine dumps. Most of the valley is a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Northumbria Police have warned residents in the Tynedale area to be careful when considering buying fish from door to door sellers after reports of a suspicious vehicle today (April 8). The police force has issued a statement notifying residents in the Gilsland, Haltwhistle and Bardon Mill areas after three males driving a white Vauxhall Caddy van had been spotted attempting to sell fish at 12:20pm. “Please always be careful around buying fish from door to door sellers,” said the police. “Vehicles should have sufficient refrigeration, have a price list available and products should be clearly labelled with weight, type, use by date and name of the supplier.”

Drug den: The South Tyne was described as fast becoming the drug-growing capital of the North-East, following the discovery of two more cannabis farms. Police discovered a £900,000 country house on the outskirts of Haltwhistle was being used as a cannabis resin factory. At Gilsland, 650 marijuana plants wer discovered growing in a house.
JPs tribute: Tynedale magistrates paid tribute to the local community for its support in the battle to save to Hexham-based court. Despite the hard-fought campaign, the court was set to close on March 31, with all business being transferred to the courts on Market Street in Newcastle from April 1.
