SCC Education Program Alumnae Named Teachers of the Year at Ft Zumwalt School District

Published: 03/12/2021 Being named Teacher of the Year is a proud and memorable moment for any teacher. It was no different for Aimee Merideth and Allyson Leyen in the Ft. Zumwalt School District this year. Merideth was named the Teacher of the Year at Emge Elementary, and Leyen was named Teacher of the Year at JL Mudd Elementary. Both got their start at St. Charles Community College. “SCC classes and teachers prepared me for the workload that comes with being an educator,” said Leyen. “As a teacher, you are constantly creating activities, making lesson plans, creating data tracking sheets, etc. Managing my workload in college with my life outside of school has prepared me to balance my teacher workload with my other jobs and personal life outside of school.”

Image: RINGO CHIU (Getty Images) I don’t know how it was for anyone else as a child, but riding the school bus for me often sucked. Mostly because the bus I rode was full of kids of varying ages. Being a first grader, I wasn’t aware of the unwritten rule of “small kids sit in the front and the big kids sit in the back.” So I sat where I wanted. And was picked on because of it by the older kids. Daily. Mostly for my ears. They called me Martin Lawrence. (It was the ’90s. And my ears stuck out. If you’re familiar with Martin Lawrence in the ’90s you would know why.) But we asked readers what their traumatic stories were from riding the school bus.

Italexit: could Italy be next to leave the European Union?

May 2020: Piazza del Popolo, Rome. (Shutterstock) If asked whether Italy could be the next country to leave the EU, an Italian European loyalist would probably answer the question: “ Certo che no. Che idea sciocca!” Of course not. What a daft idea!  They would then offer a list of reasons why not: the European flag flies alongside the Italian tricolour outside all public buildings; the founding treaty of the European Economic Community that later became the EU was signed in Italy’s capital in 1957; and Italy was a founding member of the European Monetary Union, replacing the Lira with the Euro in 1999. Surely it would be unthinkable for Italy to leave the EU?

Pamplin Media Group - Bills to pay reparations for slavery stir tough feelings

Bills to pay reparations for slavery stir tough feelings March 09 2021 I feel like this is truly the right thing for Oregon to do in order to right the wrongs of the past. Should Oregonians pay thousands each year in reparations to descendants of enslaved people? That s the question Oregon lawmakers take up Wednesday morning, March 10, as they discuss two senate bills requiring the state to study paying reparations to African American Oregonians who can trace their ancestry to slavery. Former state Rep. Tiffiny K. Mitchell of Astoria says yes, we should. A handful of others who submitted early testimony on the two bills say absolutely not.
