Pope Francis, 84, underwent a pre-planned surgery for a restriction of the sigmoid portion of the large intestine at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome this Sunday afternoon, the director of the Holy See press office, Matteo Bruni, confirmed just before midnight local time.
“The Holy Father reacted well to the intervention carried out under a general anesthesia by Professor Sergio Alfieri,” he said, without giving further details, except for the names of eight doctors involved, plus the two Vatican doctors (including the pope’s personal physician) who were present.

As a thinker Pope Francis puzzles. He raises issues, often ambiguously and in ways that unsettle things, but does not resolve them. He calls for encounter and dialogue, but refuses to answer questions. And he doesn’t like statements of doctrine.
So what’s going on? To find out we should look at what he considers basic. In
Evangelii Gaudium he lays out four principles that he says “can be a genuine path to peace within each nation and in the entire world,” and so are evidently basic to his pontificate. The principles aren’t self-explanatory, so let’s look at each and how he presents it.

Question: What was His Holiness Pope Francis’ recommendation to you when he appointed you Apostolic Nuncio Ambassador of the Holy See (Vatican) to Kuwait?
Answer: Actually, to tell you the truth, I didn’t meet Pope Francis before taking up my assignment in Kuwait! Normally we do stop off in Rome on our way to our new posting but since the pandemic was still very prevalent in Italy early on in the year, I came directly to Kuwait without visiting the Vatican. In the meantime, I have received recommendations from the Secretariat of State and the other Departments at the Vatican who have conveyed the Holy Father’s wishes in building on the excellent relations which we enjoy, to pursue dialogue with Muslim communities and to support the local Catholic Church in its pastoral work.
