DECATUR — Members of the Illinois State Police are taking a tip from Santa this year. As part of the Adopt a Snowflake program, officers purchased, wrapped and dropped off gifts at the Webster Cantrell Youth Advocacy on East Cantrell Street in Decatur. Then they drove off — but in police cars, not a sled. More than 25 children, from infants to 17 years old, will receive something from their wish lists this year thanks to the members of Illinois State Police. Holly Newbon, director of marketing and giving with Webster Cantrell Youth Advocacy, said the agency has a great relationship with law enforcement.

Flashlight “Have an emergency kit whether the weather looks bad or not,” said Wappel. “You never know when you may get stranded.” ISP Assistant Deputy Chief Mindy Carroll tells drivers to activate their hazard lights if they do happen to become stranded on the side of the road. “The move-over law doesn’t just apply to first responders or highway maintainers,” said Carroll. “It’s any passenger vehicle that has their hazard lights activated. “If somebody is stranded on the side of the road, please call [the police].” In addition, she said ISP appreciates calls about dangerous drivers. “If somebody is egregiously driving. . . don’t ever hesitate,” she said. “No dispatcher is ever going to question that.”

Season s Eatings to feed 1K on Christmas Eve

A Paducah nonprofit is making a list and checking it twice as it prepares to give free meals to over 1,000 people this Christmas Eve. Project Pomona, a local organization dedicated to providing food for those who need it, has put together Season’s Eatings with a group of partner businesses and nonprofits to safely distribute these meals to four different sites at 11 a.m. on Dec. 24. “You know … it’s been a bad year,” Project Pomona founder Bryant Hileman said. “We haven’t been able to do what we always did before — our free weekly meals at the library — but with Christmas coming up and the second round of restaurant and bar closures, even more people are faced with food insecurity than last year (and ever before).
