Hanover Township Mental Health Board awards funding at December meeting   Updated 12/21/2020 5:33 PM The Hanover Township Mental Health Board approved $11,574 in funding to three agencies during their virtual meeting on Dec. 14. The board awarded $6,000 in Emergency Funding to PADS of Elgin to cover the expense of residents who were moved from the shelter to a hotel following a positive COVID-19 case in the facility. Funding also allowed for cleaning and disinfecting of the shelter.   Easterseals received $3,000 in Staff Development Funding to attend trainings to improve their bookkeeping and fundraising operations. Based in Villa Park, with offices in Elgin, the agency provides outpatient services to children with developmental disabilities.

Coordinator announces establishment of new Firewise community

Irene Jerome, the county’s Firewise coordinator, said the CWFP is updated annually. The program helps organizations and property owners reduce fire danger and has been funded by the Secure Rural Schools payments. She said she had been the “go-to” about anything that has to do with fire prevention in Grant County. In February, she said, Oregon Fire Prevention invited her to give a presentation about how Grant County has successfully established Firewise in various communities throughout the county. She said the group was impressed, given the challenges with being geographically spread out. She said the Firewise program, like everything else in 2020, has been affected by the pandemic.

A proposed land swap between the University of Alabama and the state Mental Health Board hinged on the rezoning. The University wanted to obtain a block of land on University Boulevard in front of Bryce Hospital in exchange for the Northington property and a piece of land in Jefferson County. The rezoning was approved. • Frank M. Moody was named chairman of the board of directors of the First National Bank and the bank’s chief executive officer. George Shirley was elevated from executive vice president to president, succeeding Moody.

Wednesday, December 16, 2020 Helen “Jo Shipman passed away on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26, 2020, from COVID-19. She was born in Winifred, Montana to Clyde and Nellie Carson. Jo completed high school in three years. She attended and graduated from the University of Montana with a degree in Spanish and education. The next year she taught and coached volleyball, basketball and softball in Spray, Oregon. She returned to Montana and married Frank Kolar. They had seven children, Nelita Kolar (Schlosser) deceased, Phillip Kolar (Darla), Laurence Kolar, Francine Cummings (Chet), Eleanor Doucette (Pat), Mary Kolar, Sheila Kolar-Gioioso (Michael). They eventually bought and moved to the ranch north of Lewistown and raised sheep. Frank Kolar passed away in 1965. Jo married David Shipman in 1970, bringing Andrew Shipman to the family. Together they had one child, Zelda Boogman (Han).

New Mental Health Emergency Center Planned for Milwaukee County Residents

Milwaukee County and Four Local Health Systems Enter Negotiations to Develop Joint Venture MILWAUKEE – Today Milwaukee County, represented by the Mental Health Board and the Behavioral Health Division, along with the four Milwaukee Health Systems – Advocate Aurora Health, Ascension Wisconsin, Children’s Wisconsin and Froedtert Health – have entered into a Letter of Intent to develop a joint venture (JV) mental health emergency center. This new emergency center is the next major milestone in their shared efforts toward redesigning the county-wide mental health delivery system. Final agreements are slated for approvals in February 2021. Community engagement, detailed design and construction of the new center are expected to begin in early 2021 with the goal of being operational by the spring of 2022.
