Uganda Opposition Leader Asks Court to Nullify Museveni s Reelection

English By Halima Athumani Share on Facebook Print this page KAMPALA, UGANDA - Uganda s opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, best known as Bobi Wine, filed a petition on Monday contesting the January 14 reelection of President Yoweri Museveni. Wine s lawyers said they want the court to nullify the election but also ensure Museveni, who won a sixth term in office, can never run again. Just a little after 1 p.m., lawyers representing Wine walked to the Supreme Court and submitted volumes of documents they said prove why the January 14 election should be nullified. Lead lawyer Medard Segona said solders were seen invading polling stations and stuffing pre-ticked ballots into ballot boxes to inflate Museveni’s vote totals.

Ugandan opposition candidate Bobi Wine challenges election in court

Kampala, Uganda Ugandan presidential challenger Bobi Wine on Monday launched a court case seeking to overturn the re-election of President Yoweri Museveni, who has been in power for 35 years. Mr. Wine, whose real name is Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, had suggested he did not want to legitimize Mr. Museveni’s victory in last month’s polls by seeking justice with a court that has been reluctant to rule against the president in past elections. The Supreme Court ruled three times that electoral irregularities were not substantial enough to affect the outcome. Mr. Museveni won the Jan. 14 elections with 58% of the vote, while Mr. Wine had 35%, according to final results announced last week by the electoral commission after accounting for results from nearly all polling stations.
