OCSD officials confirm expanded in-person learning starts Monday

OSWEGO - Having met with a committee of community stakeholders Thursday morning, the Oswego City School District (OCSD) announced it would move forward with plans that will see more students return four days per week this coming Monday. OCSD Superintendent Dr. Mathis Calvin III said the meeting with shareholders went well and thanked the volunteers for their time and feedback. “We were happy to get this important input and ultimately satisfy our final state requirement to getting students back for more days in person beginning next week,” said Dr. Calvin. “Monday will be a very exciting day for us.” Under its new plan which will begin Monday, April 26, OCSD elementary school schedules would be extended by about an hour each day and secondary students at Oswego Middle School and Oswego High School by roughly an hour more.

Oswego school district eyes expanded in-person learning beginning April 26

OSWEGO — Plans unveiled Tuesday by the Oswego City School District would see all students from pre-K through grade six in schools four days per week beginning Monday and all students would have extended school day hours. A letter released by Superintendent Dr. Mathis Calvin III laid out new plans, including learning in schools for all elementary students who have selected the in-person model on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Calvin, who noted officials hope to begin implementing the new plans next Monday, April 26, said it was a “very exciting announcement.” “I appreciate all the hard work our officials have put in to put this plan together so quickly after new state guidance threw a wrench in the plans a little over a week ago,” the superintendent added. “We are ready to do what we have set out all along for: Bringing our kids back for expanded in-person learning.”

OCSD pauses new in-person plans after new state guidance

OSWEGO - Updated state guidance and rules for in-person learning has led Oswego City School District (OCSD) to put its plans for students to return more days per week on hold. School officials shared Tuesday that the current models in place for grades four through 12 would be extended as the updated state guidance requires smaller-group learning for any CDC-identified red zone, an area with more than 100 COVID-19 cases per 100,000 population over seven days, which presently includes Oswego County. “We understand people will be frustrated by this news and we at the district were incredibly excited to welcome back students for more,” said OCSD Superintendent Dr. Mathis Calvin. “With this new state guidance, it’s clear we can’t come back as planned next week, but we are exploring every avenue to expand our in-person options as soon as possible with a plan coming out next week.”
