Ex-Taliban Member Now Runs Govt Institution in Kandahar A former Taliban member who joined the peace process five years ago is now serving as head of the Hajj and Religious Affairs Directorate in the southern province of Kandahar. Mawlawi Manzoor Ahmad Husaini had different roles as the Taliban-designated security chief in Badghis, head of military commission in the western zone, and head of the Olympic committee during the group’s regime in Kabul.  Husaini took up arms while at a madrassa and fought in different parts of the country until he joined the peace process.  He had close relations with Taliban leaders during the group s beginnings and was assigned in different posts during the Taliban regime and after their fall in 2001.

Top religious body receives more funding than universities BirGün  13 March 2021 BirGün reported on 10 March. The Diyanet was allocated the funds for five projects, out of 51 projects under the category ‘Vocational and Technical Education’, while some 673 projects under ‘Higher Education’ were allocated a total of TRY5.7 billion. The only schools that received more funding than the Diyanet were Bogazici University, Istanbul University-Cerrahpasa, Marmara University, Istanbul Medeniyet University and Necmettin Erbakan University. Meanwhile, Istanbul Technical University’s budget was lower than the Diyanet’s with a mere TRY45.9 million, as well as Yildiz Technical University’s budget of TRY35.8 million.

Turkish authorities should immediately put a stop to the criminal investigation opened into women’s rights activists for shouting slogans at a March 8, 2021 International Women’s Day assembly in central Istanbul and ensure that judicial control measures imposed on them are removed, Human Rights Watch said today. The women are under investigation for “insulting” President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, a criminal offense in Turkish law punishable with a one to four-year prison sentence that violates international standards on freedom of expression.
