St. Joseph County residents having trouble paying rent because of the COVID-19 pandemic could be eligible for up to 12 months of financial help through a multimillion-dollar grant program. County officials Friday launched an expanded version of emergency rental assistance efforts that have been helping residents since 2020, largely through local charities, but got another $8.1 million infusion earlier this year from the U.S. government. The program is aimed at reducing evictions and preventing homelessness by helping people catch up on past-due rent and continue to pay going forward. The money is available to both tenants and landlords to make up for missed payments directly related to financial struggles caused by the pandemic. For qualifying recipients, the grant money can go toward rent payments as far back as April 2020. The program can also help cover utilities.
