Four Morton County and Mandan students have won the right to compete in the State Spelling Bee to be held April 1 at the Radisson Inn, Bismarck. Representing the county are Aaron Meberg, an eighth-grader from Hebron Public School, and Janet Stanton, a seventh-grader from New Salem Public School. Representing the city of Mandan are Lindsay Leingang, sixth-grader at St. Joseph School, and Jason Keller, a fifth-grader; at Christ the King School. The four were chosen from 82 students and 14 schools who competed March 2 in Mandan.
University of Mary sophomore Cindy Leingang set three school records en route to winning the pentathlon at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletes indoor track and field national championships held in Lincoln, Nebraska. Leingang, of Mandan, racked up a school record of 3,461 points and also set school records in the 55 hurdles (8.57) and high jump (5-8 ½). Leingangâs win gives her four All-American honors.
While taking an agriculture class his freshman year, Mandan High School senior Taylen Thomas was invited to an FFA event. After the event, he decided to join and served as the chapterâs reporter, vice president and current president.
FFA adviser Tanasha Wanner said Thomas takes pride in his chapter and is eager to help out his fellow members and his community through volunteering.
âHe is an exemplary leader, always setting expectations for himself and his chapter that he reaches to exceed,â Wanner wrote in a letter of recommendation. âHe is a well-poised young man who has a bright future in anything he sets his mind to.

After a nine-day run of daily high temperatures, mostly in the mid- and upper 40s with a record of 55 degrees on Feb. 19, area residents were stunned this week to see another 11 inches of wind-whipped snow fall in less than 24 hours. Travel conditions in central and western North Dakota were difficult, but eastern North Dakota received the brunt of the storm, resulting in the closure of I-94 from Jamestown to Fargo. This winterâs snowfall now stands at 54.8 inches. The record snowfall received was 91.8 inches during the winter of 1993-94.
Jeremy Trnka, son of David and Maureen Trnka, a sixth-grader at St. Joseph Grade School, has won the school level competition of the National Geography Bee, answering oral questions on geography. School winners are eligible to participate in the State Bee at the end of March.

The North Dakota legislation would bar high school and college athletes from participating in sports under any sex other than the one listed on their birth certificate.
Lead sponsor, Rep. Ben Koppelman, R-West Fargo, insists it has nothing to do with transgender athletes, but rather is about fairness in sports and preventing women from being disadvantaged by having to compete against men.
A committee discussed and set aside the bill, but it could come up at a later date.
