If the watches we’ve seen so far this year are any indication, fasten your seat belts; here come creations the likes of which you haven’t seen before. But there’s another big industry surprise, the announcement of a giant launch event bringing together traditional competitors, the likes of Cartier and Patek Philippe, IWC and Rolex.
The new show replaces the Salon Internationale de Haute Horlogerie (SIHH), held in Geneva each January until 2019, and Baselworld, held in March from 2017 to 2019. These much-missed shindigs, which attracted 15,000 and 120,000 devotees respectively, fell victim to politics, costs and the coronavirus.
The online Watches and Wonders fair begins in Geneva on April 7 and will be followed by a smaller live show in Shanghai, the accent on China reflecting that country’s outsize appetite for Swiss horological delicacies. It dominates the Asian market, which takes 54 per cent of Swiss production.
The 48 Best Watches for Men 2021
Our editors pick their favourite new and upcoming watches from big Swiss brands and under-the-radar newbies 27/01/2021
2021! The beginning of a brand new era which. feels a lot like the last. Your enervation is warranted. But empty fuel tanks aren t universal. In Switzerland, those big-ticket watch brands don t let a little pandemic get them down. On the contrary, our 2021 is already shaping up to be a banner year for great new watches.
Granted, said watch brands plan and schedule their big releases years in advance. And the Swiss are nothing if not punctual (it s not an unusual sight to see every single lab-coated watchmaker at their workspace at 9am on the dot), so it comes as little surprise that they ve got good stuff lined up – really, actually, genuinely good stuff from Rolex, Tag Heuer, Breitling and so on.
Executive Dual Time in rose gold
The big news is that this watch has had a complete design overhaul, inspired by the daring aesthetics of the marque’s Skeleton X model; however, the dual time zone function, first patented in 1994, remains the same, which stands to reason as it’s one of the smoothest ever conceived. The hourhand adjusts forward or backward with the simple touch of the plus and minus pushers located opposite the crown, while the window at nine o’clock displays a 24-hour second time zone. No fuss, but ever so clever.

Hearst Europe, publishing giant and owner of SalonQP, has cancelled the 10-year old event, which had become a major landmark on the watch calendar. There are indications that a fine watch showcase does not fare well in a consumer lifestyle setting.
