Virtual Camp Roll Call
The names of World War II confinement sites were shown during the 2021 Los Angeles Day of Remembrance, released online on Saturday on the Manzanar Committee YouTube channel. The program featured Mario Perez, (below left), Immigrant Justice Fellow at the Inland Coalition for Immigrant Justice, who talked about his work helping migrants detained at the Adelanto ICE Processing Center. Perez also recalled his own experiences being unable to get a bank account or apply for college due to immigration status. “You cannot make any mistakes, you cannot do anything wrong because it’s just taken away from you. That’s awful because we’re already living in fear, and now we’re living in a world where you have to be a perfect immigrant or you don’t deserve to be here,” Perez said.
2021 L.A. Day of Remembrance to Be Held Online Feb. 13

“Uniting with Other Communities to Keep Democracy Alive” is the theme of the 2021 Los Angeles Day of Remembrance (DOR), to be released on YouTube at 2 p.m. PST on Saturday, Feb. 13.
The pre-recorded video will be available on the Manzanar Committee’s YouTube channel, https://www.youtube.com/manzanarcommittee.
The Day of Remembrance is held annually to commemorate President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s signing of Executive Order 9066 on Feb. 19, 1942, which resulted in the unjust incarceration of over 120,000 Japanese Americans and their immigrant parents in American concentration camps and other confinement sites during World War II.

“Upholding Democracy and Constitutional Rights for All: No More Concentration Camps” is the theme for the 52nd annual Manzanar Pilgrimage, which will be held online on Saturday, April 24, at 12 p.m.
The 2021 Manzanar at Dusk program will also be held online in the hours following the Manzanar Pilgrimage.
Manzanar was the first of the American concentration camps in which more than 120,000 Japanese Americans and their immigrant parents were unjustly incarcerated during World War II.
Rose Ochi, trailblazer for civil rights and Japanese American causes, dies at 81 [Los Angeles Times]
Rose Matsui Ochi, a trailblazing Los Angeles attorney who tapped far-flung political networks from City Hall to Congress in her fierce advocacy of civil rights, criminal justice reform and Japanese American causes, has died at 81.
Ochi died Dec. 13 at a local hospital after being diagnosed with a second bout of COVID-19, which exacerbated existing health problems, her husband, Thomas Ochi, said.
Ochi broke barriers as the first Asian American woman to serve as a Los Angeles Police Commission member and as an assistant U.S. attorney general. She advised L.A. Mayors Tom Bradley and James Hahn on criminal justice, served on President Carter’sSelect Commission on Immigration and Refugee Policy and worked with President Clinton on drug policy and race relations.
