Pepper farmers want Spices Board to continue procurement during lockdown
May 24, 2021
The board has also been urged to inquire into the reports of higher imports of Sri Lankan pepper under SAFTA
Pepper farmers have sought the intervention of the Spices Board in ensuring the procurement of spices and marketing it to processors, dealers and end-users to meet the industry requirements.
They point out to the curbs on aggregators and dealers of spices, especially in Idukki and Wayanad, who are not permitted to open their shops during the lockdown. The State Industries department has permitted processing units to function, as spices fall under the food industry and are export related. However, the processing units are finding difficulties in meeting the domestic demand from masala manufacturers without the availability of raw materials.

Turmeric prices regain lustre on export demand
May 19, 2021
Buying interest from Bangladesh, Europe and Gulf countries, say traders
Turmeric prices have begun to move up over the last couple of sessions in spot and futures markets across the country following export demand from Europe, Gulf countries and Bangladesh.
Prices had dropped over the last few weeks as the curbs and lockdowns announced to control the second wave of Covid-19 pandemic affected trading.
Prices of turmeric climbed ₹600 a quintal to ₹7,100 at Nanded Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) yard since May 11, when the markets opened after being closed for over two weeks.
Turmeric loses sheen as Covid fear affects demand
April 22, 2021
Good offtake continues on the export front, say traders
Turmeric prices have dropped across various agricultural produce marketing committee (APMC) yards in the country mainly on account of slack demand.
“Turmeric prices are down as there is no demand because traders fear a fresh lockdown due to rise in Covid-19 cases could result in stockists’ purchases dropping,” said Nizamabad-based trader Amrutlal Kataria.
Prices have declined by about ₹1,000 a quintal at various APMCs in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Maharashtra. Prices in Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra have slid to below ₹7,400 from about ₹8,400 at the start of the month.
