A Queensland police officer is taken to hospital in a serious condition after being stabbed at least twice in the chest at a major Cairns shopping centre.

Firefighters and Hazmat technicians used high-powered fans to push dangerous hydrogen sulfide gas out of a high-rise building near the Rideau Canal on Thursday evening.
Once the gas had dissipated and technicians could ensure the air in the building was safe, evacuated residents were allowed to return to their units shortly before 7 p.m., Ottawa Fire Services reported.

“Building maintenance staff remain on location to resolve any plumbing issues which led to the release and buildup of gas,” a media release added.
