Two acclaimed Mississippi writers who are keeping the state’s tradition of literary excellence vibrant will be the guest presenters for the next University of Southern Mississippi (USM) University Forum Online, set for Tuesday, March 9 at 6:30 p.m.
Jesmyn Ward and Kiese Laymon will engage each other and their audience in a wide-ranging conversation about writing, race, and Mississippi in an event co-sponsored by the USM Honors College and the USM McNair Scholars Program, along with generous support

Lee University’s Alanis Burton, a senior health science major from Athens, Tn., was awarded the BlueCross Power of We Scholarship from the BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Foundation.
The BlueCross Power of We Scholarship is an annual scholarship awarded to three outstanding minority students in Tennessee pursuing careers in health care related fields. This year, six students from across Tennessee were awarded. The additional scholarships are part of the company’s commitment to fight systemic racism and injustice and to highlight the diverse health care workers across the state.

Sylvia Mendez from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs will help lead the WSU TRIO McNair Scholars Alumni Faculty Panel Discussion on Tuesday, Feb. 23 from noon to 1 p.m. on Zoom

Washington State University and Ronald E. McNair Achievement Program graduates will talk about their journeys to becoming faculty members at institutions across the country as part of National TRIO Day Celebration.
Mapuana Antonio from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Majel Boxer from Fort Lewis College in Colorado, and Sylvia Mendez from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs will lead the WSU TRIO McNair Scholars Alumni Faculty Panel Discussion on Tuesday, Feb. 23 from noon to 1 p.m. on Zoom. It is one of several events planned to highlight WSU’s TRIO programs and the impact they have on student success.

There was good news from Washington this week for the College of St. Scholastica. Calls from the offices of U.S. Sen. Norm Coleman and Congressman Jim Oberstar confirmed that the college s McNair Scholars Program will be funded for another four years.
Oberstar said the college will receive $240,043 under the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program.
