Iowa man arrested after leading police on chases in Knox and McDonough Counties

April 8, 2021 Dispatchers in McDonough County on Monday, April 5th received a 911 call from a female passenger in a sedan leading McDonough County Sheriff Deputies on a chase northbound on US Highway 67. Just after noon on Monday, after committing several traffic violations, the sedan driven by 36-year old Justin W. Patten of Burlington, Iowa sped away from Macomb Police onto US 67. Sheriff’s Deputies continued the pursuit while the female passenger maintained an open phone line with dispatchers. Authorities quickly discovered the same sedan led police on a chase in Knox County earlier that day. Patten, who was wanted by the Iowa Department of Corrections for Escape, turned eastbound on Illinois Route 9 but eventually ran out of gas and took off on foot through a cornfield. He was quickly apprehended by Deputies and transported to the McDonough County Jail and is being held in lieu of bond. Law & Legal Committee discusses oversight, responsibility Steven Barnum Voice Correspondent McDONOUGH COUNTY During their February meeting, Law & Legal Committee Chairman Joe Erlandson made a statement regarding the committee’s role and scope of responsibilities. Erlandson said that McDonough County Board policies specify that the committee’s role is to “oversee the use of county resources in the following areas: Sheriff’s Department, Supervisor of Assessments and GIS, Veteran’s Assistance Commission, and Landfill/Tri-County Waste Management.” During January’s meeting, the Democratic Women of McDonough County requested that the committee investigate concerns and questions about how the Sheriff s department and jail function and are administered. McDonough County Dispatchers Honored

Rich Egger The McDonough County Communications Board awarded Letters of Recognition to two of the county s emergency dispatchers. Micheal Phelps and Jayson Sams were the two dispatchers on duty the night of the shooting at Western Illinois University. The initial call from Thompson Hall came in at around 10:35 p.m. on Tuesday, September 15, 2020. Sams answered the call, which came from the shooting victim, Amarion Hargrove. While Sams handled that call, Phelps quickly got out the word to local law enforcement departments. “He (Sams) is trying to talk to the actual victim who was shot and I’m trying to get everybody there,” Phelps said.
