Kuala Lumpur: A pensioner of a private company lost RM1.3 million after falling victim to a Macau Scam syndicate, early last month.
Petaling Jaya District Police Chief ACP Mohamad Fakhrudin Abdul Hamid said the 60-year-old woman was contacted by an individual who impersonated as a bank officer, alleging that her credit card had been used to purchase bitcoins on a social website. He said the victim denied performing such transactions and had given her personal details to the caller, who also claimed to be a Bank Negara representative, to help her lodge a police report.
PETALING JAYA: A senior citizen here has lost more than RM1.3mil to a Macau scam.
Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Mohamad Fakhrudin Abdul Hamid said the incident occurred at around 2pm on April 1. The woman was at her house in Petaling Jaya when she received a call from a bank claiming that a credit card registered under her name was used to buy bitcoins via social media. She denied making such purchases, and the caller then connected her to someone who claimed to work at Bank Negara, he said in a statement on Monday (May 17).
He said the victim gave all her personal information to the Bank Negara employee who offered to lodge a police report on her behalf.

If there was anything he was not able to do during his two years of helming the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), he said it was not being able to visit Sabah and Sarawak to solve problems facing the Sang Saka Biru team in the two states.
