Picture: SUPPLIED The agriculture sector, in light of the devastating second wave of COVID 19 on Fiji, has experienced a massive surge with thousands returning to farming as a means of livelihood. However, despite the reliance on the agriculture sector to sustain livelihoods and provide food security, farmers have been immensely impacted by climate change – affecting yields and profits. To address this, the Ministry of Waterways provides the necessary support to farmers around the country to ensure that the impact to agricultural production is minimised. In line with this, the Ministry of Waterways through the “Drainage for Farmland” program has been assisting rice farmers in the North to ensure a sufficient supply of rice continues to meet local demand.
