The agriculture sector, in light of the devastating second wave of COVID 19 on Fiji, has experienced a massive surge with thousands returning to farming as a means of livelihood.
However, despite the reliance on the agriculture sector to sustain livelihoods and provide food security, farmers have been immensely impacted by climate change – affecting yields and profits.
To address this, the Ministry of Waterways provides the necessary support to farmers around the country to ensure that the impact to agricultural production is minimised.
In line with this, the Ministry of Waterways through the “Drainage for Farmland” program has been assisting rice farmers in the North to ensure a sufficient supply of rice continues to meet local demand.
ENVIRONMENT COURT WILL CUT DOWN DELAYS - DR. REDDY
14/07/2021
“It is essential to set up an environment court to cut down delays which are hindering the implementation of environmental laws in Fiji. The prosecution launched in the ordinary Criminal Courts never reach a timely or groundbreaking conclusion either because of the workload in these Courts, lack of specialised judges, or because there is no proper appreciation of the significance of the environmental matters on the part of those in charge of conducting these cases.”
This was the key statement delivered by the Minister for Agriculture, Waterways and Environment Dr Mahendra Reddy while addressing the Inaugural IUCN Oceania Environmental Law virtual Conference this morning.

2020 FIJI AGRICULTURE CENSUS REPORT RELEASED
08/07/2021
The 2020 Fiji Agriculture Census Report was officially released today by the Minister for Agriculture, Waterways and Environment Hon. Dr. Mahendra Reddy.
Minister Reddy said it had been an endeavour for the Ministry of Agriculture to attempt to consolidate these important statistics while ensuring that the best possible set of information that highlighted Fiji’s Agriculture Sector structure at a certain point in time was presented holistically and without fault.
“The Census of Agriculture is one of the key pillars of any national statistical system and in many developing countries; it is often the only means of producing statistical information on the structure and other relevant aspects of the agriculture sector.
